2 PM Who Will Write Our History
Documentary – USA (Yiddish, English, Polish); 95 minutes; 2018.
Nancy Spielberg, producer of this project and a friend who has also been a guest of the WVJFF, has arranged for a special Charleston showing of this landmark film.
In November 1940, days after the Nazis sealed 450,000 Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, a secret band of journalists, scholars and community leaders decided that they wanted their history to be written by them and not the Nazis. Narrated by three-time Academy Award® nominee Joan Allen and Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody. Warning: This is an important film, but its detailed depiction of the Holocaust may not be for everyone.
3:45 PM King Bibi: The Life and Performances of Benjamin Netanyahu
Documentary – USA and Israel (Hebrew, English); 87 minutes; 2018.
Brilliantly assembled entirely of footage from countless TV appearances, this potent portrayal charts the ascent of Israel’s media-savvy prime minster to reveal a controversial politician’s instinct for seizing power through the art of communication. From one studio to another, “Bibi” evolved from Israel’s great political hope into a controversial figure, whom some perceive as Israel’s savior while others see him as a cynical politician who will stop at nothing to retain his power.
5:15 PM Yidlife Crisis episodes—Yiddish comedy from Montreal; 15 minutes.
The WVJFF is sponsored by the Federated Jewish Charities of Charleston.
